Royal Kilburn Abbott Jr. ’37 died at home in Stamford, Connecticut, on August 5, 2006. At Dartmouth Roy was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa, majored in chemistry and graduated with honors. After Dartmouth he obtained a master’s in chemistry from Freiberg University in Germany and a doctorate from Iowa State University. His career spanned 50 years working for General Electric, Pfizer and Bristol-Meyers corporations. Early in his career he and wife Marie lived in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, for nine years while Roy worked as a chemical engineer and executive assistant to the vice president of manufacturing for General Electric. He traveled abroad extensively while overseeing the construction of new manufacturing plants in multiple countries. A longtime supporter of Boy Scouts, Roy was honored in 1998 with the Silver Beaver Award for more than 50 years of service. He was predeceased by his father, Royal Sr., class of 1909. He is survived by Marie; sister Mona; children Stephen ’75, Richard ’80, Robert ’84 and Carolyn ’86; and nine grandchildren.
